August 8th, 2010 by admin

There was a home HIV test in the pharmacy  that I found today on my to the diabetic section. Anyone every try it out or know anything about it?

Yes. It is a good first step if you are “not sure”. Remember, no matter what the results, you should go to a clinic and get a blood draw.

How to do at home HIV testing?

August 6th, 2010 by admin

Where can we get a kit to do HIV testing at home? Something with privacy.

At home HIV testing can be done in a confidential manner without knowledge of others. It is useful for early detection of HIV. A person can be HIV-infected for many years while looking and feeling healthy, with no signs at all of being sick. HIV testing is the only way to find out for sure.

Nowadays, it is possible to do your testing with complete anonymity with these at home HIV testkits. However, at some stage you need to go for proper testing and advice. Home testing is only the very initial stage.

Is HIV/AIDS a main reason the government is so frantic about passing health care bill?

June 27th, 2010 by admin

On Doctor OZ TV show I was shocked to hear him say every sexually active female should be tested for sexually transmitted diseases. (This was a show about cheating men I believe.) Now CDC has disclosed that one out of six people have genital herpes. Also there is an uptick in HIV/AIDS infections. Even though they say it is mostly drug users, prostitutes, homosexuals, bisexuals (and people who have genital herpes) spreading these infections, they will need all of us to pay the medical and drug bills (Just drugs for AIDS is at least $1500. a month). http://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/Newsroom/msmpressrelease.html http://www.nola.com/health/index.ssf/2010/03/report_says_1_in_6_americans_i.html

No one really knows how many deaths from HIV/AIDS due to secrecy. It is estimated almost 600,000 people since 1980′s-2007. That doesn’t include those who died trying to keep from dying ( toxic treatment.) Many of AIDS deaths are from organ failure. Before my husband and I got our marriage license we had to get blood test for STDs.(before HIV/AIDS) When “free love” hippies and drugs took over kids anything that threatened promiscuious sex became hate.

Let’s look at some other things such as men and women who do not disclose their previous sexual partners honestly. The only way to know someone is HIV negative is to make them get tested BEFORE sexual activity. As for health care insurance, everyone should own health care insurance if they plan to use health care facilities and not pay 100% of the bill. Otherwise, don’t use our health care facilities. …

Furthermore, when you see a five year old with a cold sore on his lip, ask yourself how that five year old contracted the herpes virus. The answer is his parents or family members who kiss him on the mouth. People, quit kissing your children on the mouth. …

HIV 101 – English

June 15th, 2010 by admin

This HIV 101 video clip provides basic information about HIV transmission and prevention, as well as resources to get further HIV information, including how to get tested.

Video created by JSI/Denver as part of the CDC HIV Prevention Capacity Building Assistance Program. JSI/Denver is in the third year of a five-year program to implement a Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) Program for the CDC (directly funded) community-based organizations (CBOs), health departments (HDs) and (health department-funded) CBOs that address the HIV prevention needs of Latinos in the CDC-defined Mid-West Region of the United States (CO, IA, KS, MO, MT, NE, ND, SD, UT, WY).

The goal of this program is to improve the capacity of CBOs and HDs to implement, improve, and evaluate HIV prevention interventions for high-risk Latino individuals of unknown serostatus, including pregnant women, and people living with HIV/AIDS and their partners.

How often after unprotected sex can I get an accurate HIV test if affected? what about at home testing?

March 4th, 2010 by admin

I was raped and wondering how long I have to wait to see if I have been infected. I have no insurance and the nurses in the ER didn’t offer me one. I am not sure how to get one done or how long I have to wait to get an accurate result. Is it something that I have to get done a few times over a period of time. What about other tests? What else should I get tested for and where should I go?

They normally test you right away and 3 months later. The antibodies for the test don’t show up until then. There is even a home test for HIV.

HIV Home Test? Anyone? How reliable…?

February 28th, 2010 by admin

Does anyone know about this test? Is it reliable? How do you get results… by calling in and talking to someone at anytime?

Depends on the name of the test and who made it. I use a test in the hospital that is extremely reliable as an ANTIBODY test -meaning that it takes awhile after exposure before the person makes the antibody – sometimes weeks. There has been talk about making this kit into an over-the-counter test. It is made by Orasure. I am not familiar with other brands- but they might be good too. It is vital to understand the limitations of such a test! Just because you are negative today, doesn’t mean that you didn’t catch the virus yesterday.

How can I buy an HIV home self -test kit in Dubai?

February 5th, 2010 by admin

HIV or the human immunodeficiency virus is a virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is a retrovirus that replicates in and handicaps the body’s immune defense by infecting helper T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells. HIV is transmitted through direct contact with infected mucous membrane or any of the body fluids, like blood, seminal and vaginal fluids, and also through breast feeding.

AIDS itself is not a disease; it is a condition that leads to myriad opportunistic diseases like microbial and viral infections in almost all organ systems including gastrointestinal, respiratory, neurological and cardio-vascular systems and certain forms of tumors that develop due to weakening of immune system. Presence of HIV can be detected by standard ELISA that tests for anti-HIV antibodies (Type IgG and IgM) and the HIV p24 antigen. Nowadays PCR based HIV detection tests are also conducted for preliminary analysis.

Most of the government hospitals and dispensaries offer free ELISA checks for AIDS in many developing countries. Many private diagnostic labs also offer services for AIDS detection and post-detection care.

Should I Get Tested for HIV?

November 7th, 2009 by admin

If you are sexually active – that is a good question.  The answer depends on what type of risk behaviors you or your partner(s) may have engaged in.  After you consider and evaluate some of the behaviors listed below – you may want to get tested together.

The best course of action is to try and reduce your risk of even getting HIV.  Abstaining from sex is the most effective way to avoid the disease.  The other way to avoid it is to have a monogamous relationship with one person who is uninfected and only has sexual relations with you.

If you are not sure that both you and your partner are HIV negative, use a latex condom to help protect both you and your partner from HIV and other STDs.  Consistently using latex condoms has shown to be very effective in preventing transmission of HIV (although not 100%)  if also used correctly.  If you or your partner is allergic to latex you can use a polyurethane plastic condom for either the female or the male to maintain protection.

The following are some behaviors that will increase your chances of getting HIV. If you can answer yes to any of them, you should definitely get an HIV test. If you choose to continue with any of these behaviors, you should also be tested every year.  You can discuss a testing schedule with your doctor or health care provider.

  • Have you injected drugs or steroids or shared equipment (such as needles, syringes, works) with others?

  • Have you had unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex with men who have sex with men, multiple partners, or anonymous partners?

  • Have you exchanged sex for drugs or money?

  • Have you been diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis, tuberculosis (TB), or a sexually transmitted disease (STD), like syphilis?

  • Have you had unprotected sex with someone who could answer yes to any of the above questions?

If you have had sex with someone whose history of sex partners and/or drug use is unknown to you or if you or your partner has had many sex partners, then you have more of a chance of being infected with HIV. Both you and your new partner should get tested for HIV, and learn the results, before having sex for the first time.

Home Testing Kits:

Consumer-controlled test kits (popularly known as “home testing kits”) were first licensed in 1997. Only the Home Access HIV-1 Test is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. (The accuracy of other home test kits cannot be verified).  The Express HIV Testing Kit is a great choice for those wanting results now. The Express kit is very similar to the Standard Test Kit, (also available thru this link) except that results are available in 3 business days. Our kits are easy to use and come with detailed instructions with illustrations that explain the process from pre-test registration through calling in for your results. A great thing about our HIV testing kits is that we have professionally trained counselors available to assist you through what could be a trying time in your life.
