Do You Suspect You May Have Diabetes?

November 28th, 2009 by admin

Are you worried that you may have developed diabetes but you have not been officially diagnosed yet?  Over 6 million Americans do not know it but they do indeed have diabetes and the numbers are on the rise.  Do you have many of the risk factors and it is something that you constantly have on your health radar?

Like many Americans we can’t help but hear about the epidemic of the disease in our country as well as the precursor which is pre-diabetes.  If you are worried but fearful of seeing the doctor then you should at least be monitoring your blood sugar with a simple test that you can do several times a day.  You can buy a blood glucose monitor and some test strips.  They are available at most local pharmacies and also online.  Bayer the Contour Diabetes Testing Meter Blood Glucose Monitoring System- New Vibrant Apple Green Color It is an easy test to do yourself at home – and it is something that diagnosed diabetics do several times a day to keep track of their blood sugar levels and help keep the disease in control.

Being aware of the condition of your blood sugar levels is the first step to healing yourself.  Watch the video below for a quick tutorial of how to do this simple finger-prick blood test.  Test yourself for about two weeks.  Most blood glucose monitors keep your results in the memory so you have a record and an average number but you can also get a notebook and write the results down.  If you choose to do that then you might as well write down everything you eat so that you can begin to observe some patterns.  You are going to have to do this anyway if it turns out you do have diabetes so it’s good practice – just in case.  Keeping a food diary or food journal is recommended for diabetics especially when they are first diagnosed.

So, during this test-run experiment be vigilant and really get a good record so that if you do end up needing to follow-up with your doctor then he or she can see right away what has been going on inside your body and start to help you with a recovery and treatment plan.  If your numbers are very high it is recommended that you do not delay – get to the doctor as soon as possible.  The sooner treatment is started the better.  Some diabetics need to go on insulin treatment; some on oral medications and some borderline patients can correct the sugar levels with diet alone.  It is definitely not a disease to second guess – if you have it (and you will know by doing this self testing) then seeing your doctor is no longer an option because waiting could cause irreversible health problems.Your doctor will probably order a test called the hemoglobin A1c – which will determine an average of what your glucose levels (HbA1c) have been like over the past three months.  It will give a clearer picture of your state of disease.  This test is also one that you can do yourself in your own home.  If you feel that you want to know your number before you go to the doctor you can order the A1c test right here. (Click the Test Country Link below). It will give you the results you need so you can determine whether you need to make that appointment or not.

The test is easy to do. Once you collect a blood sample  (again it’s just a simple finger prick), just send it into the nationally certified laboratory.   You will receive your results fast and be on your way to better controlling your diabetes (if you have it).  Full instructions come with the test.  Your sugar levels may be just fine and doing these home tests will reassure you that you are in good health.  Or you may be pre-diabetic and knowing this can help you to begin taking care not to get full blown diabetes.  The A1c test is FDA approved and is the same exact test your doctor would order anyway.

Diabetes can be a devastating disease but it is one of the few that can be treated and those afflicted with it can live a normal life.  There are ways to help undo, and help your body recover from, the damage already caused to your body.   This is one disease that can be reversed, so to speak.  You will always have it but it can be kept in such tight control that you never would know you have it.  This can be done through diet and lifestyle changes.  Diet is the most crucial tool in your arsenal against diabetes.  So don’t delay.  If that little voice of reason in your head keeps whispering the word diabetes to you then you owe it to yourself to check it out.  Home medical testing is on the rise as more and more patients want to take their healthcare control into their own hands.  Following up with your doctor is always recommended if any home medical test you take comes back with results that warrant a second opinion. What are the Symptoms of an Elevated Thyroid?

November 14th, 2009 by admin

I got a blood test and it shows that my TSH is a bit elevated. My neck feels a lil swollen and I feel a bit hyper. Is this overreactive thyroid? I also have shortness of breath at night when I am going to bed. But not asleep yet.

Is your TSH elevated high (big number) hypothyroid or low (small number) hyperthyroid?? I am currently hyperthyroid on purpose to suppress any cancer and the symptoms that I have is elevated heart rate/ pulse with a TSH of .26. When I was even more hyperthyroid (TSH .08) I had extreme anxiety/ nervousness, jittery/ hyper, every elevated heart rate at rest, fine hand tremors, increased sweating, sensitivity towards heat, insomia, and I felt like my breathing was heavier at night.

Well, symptoms of hypothyroidism usually include tiredness, weakness, feeling cold or chilled, dry hair and skin, brittle nails, depression, constipation, trouble thinking clearly, and for women, heavy or irregular menstrual periods. I went into extreme hypothyroidism (TSH 162) after a total thyroidectomy and being off any thyroid replacement hormone for a month made me feel mostly lazy and my heart rate/pulse was lower/weaker. That shortness of breath you have is associated with hypothyroidism, some with the swelling.

However, your hyperactivity is not associated with high TSH levels, lethargy is. A hyper feeling is generally associated with hyperthyroidism (I’m  currently this) or an over dose. Sorry this is so long, I was confused if you are showing “hypo” or “hyper” symptoms. Hope this helps.

If you are concerned about your thyroid and have some of these symptoms there is a medical lab test available for home use.  Follow the instructions that come with the test kit and results will be delivered to you from an approved lab.  Always be sure to follow up with your own doctor.  This is not a substitute for professional medical care. Should I Get Tested for HIV?

November 7th, 2009 by admin

If you are sexually active – that is a good question.  The answer depends on what type of risk behaviors you or your partner(s) may have engaged in.  After you consider and evaluate some of the behaviors listed below – you may want to get tested together.

The best course of action is to try and reduce your risk of even getting HIV.  Abstaining from sex is the most effective way to avoid the disease.  The other way to avoid it is to have a monogamous relationship with one person who is uninfected and only has sexual relations with you.

If you are not sure that both you and your partner are HIV negative, use a latex condom to help protect both you and your partner from HIV and other STDs.  Consistently using latex condoms has shown to be very effective in preventing transmission of HIV (although not 100%)  if also used correctly.  If you or your partner is allergic to latex you can use a polyurethane plastic condom for either the female or the male to maintain protection.

The following are some behaviors that will increase your chances of getting HIV. If you can answer yes to any of them, you should definitely get an HIV test. If you choose to continue with any of these behaviors, you should also be tested every year.  You can discuss a testing schedule with your doctor or health care provider.

  • Have you injected drugs or steroids or shared equipment (such as needles, syringes, works) with others?

  • Have you had unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex with men who have sex with men, multiple partners, or anonymous partners?

  • Have you exchanged sex for drugs or money?

  • Have you been diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis, tuberculosis (TB), or a sexually transmitted disease (STD), like syphilis?

  • Have you had unprotected sex with someone who could answer yes to any of the above questions?

If you have had sex with someone whose history of sex partners and/or drug use is unknown to you or if you or your partner has had many sex partners, then you have more of a chance of being infected with HIV. Both you and your new partner should get tested for HIV, and learn the results, before having sex for the first time.
